With the continuous upgrading and development of LED display technology, MIP and COB, two very different technologies, have become popular choices for LED displays. These two technologies have their own advantages and characteristics. In this article, we will make an in-depth comparison between MIP and COP LED displays, and hope it will be helpful to you.

What is MIP technology?

The full name of MIP is Micro LED in Package, which is a new type of micro-packaging technology specially designed for Micro LED. It is mainly used to realize the organic combination of Micro LED and discrete devices by individually encapsulating the whole large-area display panel and transferring the Micro LED chip to the substrate by using macro transfer technology.

After encapsulation, the chip is cut into single or multiple small chips, followed by small chips for slicing, mixing, and finally chip mounting process and screen body processing, the production of LED display is completed.

This technology embodies the concept of “whole to zero”, its advantage lies in the chip size is smaller, lower loss, display consistency is higher, to enhance the performance and efficiency of the LED display.

What is COB technology?

COB is the abbreviation of Chip on Board, which refers to chip on board technology. Mainly multiple RGB chips directly welded to a PCB board, through a one-piece diaphragm package, the formation of a unit module, and finally assembled into a complete LED display.

COB package is mainly divided into standard and flip-flop type two kinds of ways, standard COB light-emitting angle and bonding line distance from the technical point of view to limit the performance of the product to improve.

Flip type COB is the upgraded version of standard COB, which not only further improves the reliability, but also simplifies the production process, and the display effect is great.

Comparison of MIP and COB LED Display

Do you know the difference between MIP and COB LED display? Next, I will compare them in detail in terms of encapsulation, pixel pitch, color, contrast and brightness, and so on.

Packaging

The core difference between MIP technology and COB technology lies in the encapsulation method, COB LED display does not require the use of brackets, but directly placed on the substrate chip, and then use silicone or conductive adhesive through the lead bonding for electrical connection, so it has the advantage of higher black consistency and higher contrast.

In contrast, MIP technology is a discrete component packaging method, that is, after the start of production by interconnecting the LED chip electrodes and substrate electrodes connected to each other through the interconnecting frame, so MIP in the light mixing performance, uniformity and repairability of the performance of the better, especially in the small pitch display, MIP can provide excellent visual effect.

Pixel Pitch

The pixel pitch of LED display refers to the distance between two neighboring pixel focuses. Pixel pitch is related to the resolution of the display, and a smaller pixel pitch means a higher pixel density and higher screen resolution.

The pixel pitch of COB LED display is usually between 0.6mm and 2.0mm, while the pixel pitch of MIP LED display can be below 0.4mm, so MIP LED display can bring users higher quality and clearer picture.

Color

In terms of color, COB LED and MIP LED perform equally well in terms of color reproduction. The Micro LED chip used in MIP LED display can truly reproduce the color of the image, making the audience feel more realistic. In addition, COB LED display can present HDR effect better, and also provide wider color gamut and richer color levels. Therefore, COB LED display can also restore the image to the real effect.

Contrast Ratio and Brightness

Although both have the ability of high brightness output, COB LED display may be better in terms of brightness and contrast, especially in some scenes with interfering light, COB LED display is still able to provide audiences with high-quality visual experience.

Production efficiency

In terms of production efficiency, MIP packaging technology utilizes an advanced mass transfer and soldering process, which significantly improves production efficiency. Although COB packaging technology eliminates the cumbersome surface mount process, it still requires multiple steps in the packaging process.

For example, solid crystal, welding line, test, etc., which makes the encapsulation efficiency is low, and the process requirements are strict. Therefore, the production efficiency of COB LED display is slower than MIP LED display.

Display Performance

COB LED display has high color reproduction, excellent luminous uniformity, high display stability and high contrast. Compared with MIP technology is slightly inferior, MIP LED display by virtue of advanced packaging technology, in the display effect performance is better. MIP technology can achieve more accurate color control and local dimming, to enhance the clarity of the picture quality and the overall effect, especially suitable for the high requirements of the picture quality of the scene.

Picture quality and details

In terms of image quality and details, MIP LED display can achieve smaller pixel pitch, thus improving the display resolution and details of the picture, so MIP LED display is more delicate and rich in details than COB LED display, and it can present the colors of the real image.

Reliability and Compatibility

From the point of view of reliability, COB LED display is slightly better. Because COB technology integrates the LED chip directly on the circuit board, avoiding the traditional SMD display in the LED lamp bead package, thus improving the stability and reliability of the display.

And the design of COB display is thinner and lighter, which makes it easier to install and transport, as well as more aesthetically pleasing.

In terms of compatibility, MIP LED display is more compatible. Because MIP technology can be adapted to various pixel pitches and display effects. For example, 0.4 MIP equipment can produce LED displays with pixel pitches ranging from P0.5 to P1.2MM, while the pixel pitch of COB depends on the package size.

MIP’s compatibility improves the flexibility of the supply chain and allows it to respond to changes in market demand.

Application Areas

In terms of scope of use, COB technology is mainly used in the high-end display market, especially in scenarios with high stability, reliability, and visual effects, such as control rooms, large conference rooms, exhibitions, and other indoor scenarios. As MIP chip size is shrinking, the scope of use of MIP technology is more flexible, and MIP is attracting attention in commercial display, retail and XP shooting scenes.

In addition, MIP’s cost advantages and flexible packaging allow it to have unlimited potential in future Micro LED applications, especially in small devices such as LED displays, wearables, Micro LED TVs, and automotive displays.

Cost Effectiveness

In terms of cost-effectiveness, compared to COB LED displays, MIP LED displays use MIP technology to reduce production costs by optimizing the use of materials and process simplification. In addition, MIP LED displays not only have a higher yield, are easier to test and repair, but also have less material waste.

In contrast, single-lamp maintenance in COB LED displays is challenging, and it is more difficult and costly to repair individual lamps without affecting surrounding components. As a result, high-quality MIP LED displays are more affordable.

Response Time

MIP LED displays are made by directly driving light-emitting diodes, so it has a very fast response time, usually less than one millisecond, which makes it excellent in dynamic content display and avoids the phenomenon of dragging and blurring.

Although the response time of COB LED display can generally reach the millisecond level, but compared with MIP LED display may be in some specific occasions will be slightly inferior. For example, in gaming, virtual reality and other scenarios that require fast response time and high dynamic images, MIP LED displays are more advantageous.

Power consumption

Although COB LED display is a flip-flop process, there is no light source shade, low power consumption, but each pixel in the MIP LED display is independent light, do not need a backlight, so the power consumption of MIP LED display is even lower.

MIP and COB LED displays: how to choose

When facing how to choose between MIP and COB LED display, I recommend you to choose COB LED display. Because COB LED display has a superb cost performance.

Not only the price is affordable, ultra-thin, anti-collision and anti-pressure aspects are relatively excellent, and the application of the scene is more extensive, especially suitable for seamless splicing of the screen, high brightness and aesthetic requirements of the scene, such as large conference rooms, high-end commercial display, art exhibitions and so on.
