In our daily life will encounter a variety of displays, which common types of displays are LED, LCD, OLED and so on. So what do you know about these displays? Let’s learn about it through the contents of this chapter.
The type of display
In order to better understand the displays that appear in daily life, we have made the following four classifications:
LED Display
LED displays are mainly assembled by LED modules and LED cabinets. Different types of modules and cabinets can be selected and assembled according to the different sizes of LEDs to meet the needs of customers. LED displays have the advantages of autonomous light emission and easy installation and disassembly.
Organic Light Emitting Diode Display(OLED)
The full name of OLED is Organic Light Emitting Diode. The “organic” in the full name refers to the fact that the semiconductor material used to make OLED chips is organic. OLEDs have the ability to emit light on their own. The principle of OLED is that OLED pixels have an emissive layer that allows light to be emitted.
Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED)
AMOLED is an OLED display technology, where “AM” stands for Active Matrix. AMOLED is able to control each individual pixel using thin-film transistors (TFTs). In general, the TFT controls the current flow to the pixel, thus acting as a switch for pixel addressing.
Passive Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode(PMOLED)
PM OLED is a derivative of OLED display technology, where “PM” stands for passive matrix. Pixels in PM OLED are addressed in rows and columns. This ensures that the screen lights up where it needs to according to the pixels in the activated columns or rows. 3.

LCD
An LCD monitor, which can be called a “liquid crystal display”, is one of the modern display technologies. It has a certain number of color or black-and-white pixels, which are placed in a light source or a reflected ambient light source to make an image appear.
Twisted Nematic (TN) LCD
TN is called “Twisted Nematic”. When there is no electric current passing through, the liquid crystals are arranged in a twisted shape. Since no light passes through, this makes the display opaque. When a current is passed, they untwist themselves, allowing light to flow into the LCD panel.
Vertical Alignment (VA) LCD
VA, or “Vertical Alignment”. When the power is turned off, the liquid crystal molecules are aligned vertically with respect to the display surface. When the power is turned on, they become horizontally oriented.
In-Plane Switching (IPS) LCD
The liquid crystal cells of an IPS LCD are aligned horizontally in the absence of voltage. This allows them to have a wide angle of switching and opening as electrons flow through the cells. Liquid crystal cells, when under voltage, rotate to a 90-degree angle to allow light to pass through and form an image.
Thin Film Transistor (TFT) LCD
TFT LCD is the most common type of LCD, the liquid crystal pixels in TFT LCD are driven by thin film transistors. This results in a high brightness and high contrast display.

New Displays
Quantum Dot LED (QLED) Displays
QLED, or Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode display. It has quantum dot filters, which are thin films of tiny molecules that emit different colors of light when exposed to light, thus enhancing color accuracy and increasing the brightness of the display.
Micro-LED Display
Micro-LED is a new type of flat panel display technology. It is composed of micro LED arrays of individual pixel elements.
It has the performance of high contrast and fast response time.
Mini-LED Display
Mini-LED is a new type of backlight technology that uses smaller size LEDs as the backlight source. Unlike traditional LCD technology, the backlight unit of Mini LED is smaller and denser, which can provide higher brightness and more uniform backlight effect.
The application of some displays
After understanding the various types of displays, let’s move on to the applications of displays.
Household
Television
Most of the display types of TVs we often use at home are LCD, Mini LED and so on. Different display types can bring us different visual experience. We can measure from the price, color clarity, etc. to choose a suitable monitor for us.
Computer
Like the computers we use in our bedroom, most of the display types are LCD monitors, a few use OLED monitors. Computer monitors usually use higher resolution so that the image is presented better, and it is a very good choice for workers to process images.
Commercial
Large billboards
LED displays are mainly used. This type of display is assembled by one module, which is easier to assemble and simpler to maintain.
Mall Advertising Display
Different from the above large billboards, shopping mall advertising displays use more flexible screens, which can be transformed into different shapes to diversify the style of shopping malls.
Conclusion
After we understand the different types of displays, we have a deeper understanding of some of the technologies, applications of the display, they can help us pick a more appropriate display.
