We all know that GPU scaling can give gamers a more realistic gaming experience, however, in this day and age, most people no longer use GPU scaling, do you know why? If not, let me reveal the reason for that!
What is GPU scaling?
GPU scaling is a technical function built into the graphics card. GPU scaling is based on the resolution of the display to achieve a more outstanding aspect ratio, thus optimizing the image quality of the display to get a more realistic visual effect.
This optimizes the image quality of the display for a more realistic visual effect, enabling a lower ratio display to get a higher quality image. For example, it can make the characters of old games look more flexible, making the gaming experience better for gamers.

How GPU scaling works
To GPU scale a low-resolution image, the image needs to be adjusted by specific GPU calculations, and the main purpose of these specific algorithms is to resample the original image pixel points.
For standard-sized image pixels, the GPU calculations only need to increase or adjust the image quality effect for projection, because standard-sized image scaling can fill the entire size of the display without stretching it, resulting in a high quality image with more clarity and vibrant colors.
Types of GPUs
Maintaining the Aspect Ratio
When you are playing a game or viewing an image and the ratio of the image is different from the aspect ratio of your display, we have to choose a type of GPU hardware that scales the image quality perfectly. Since the image ratio is not the same as the ratio of the display, it is not possible to maintain an equal aspect ratio on the display.
After GPU scaling, the display will be scaled to the perfect height and the left and right sides of the unfilled width will have visible black edges, also known as black bars.
Full Screen
With full screen scaling using GPU scaling, the left and right sides of the display will not appear as black bars. However, once the GPU is scaled to the appropriate width or height, the GPU will stretch the image directly horizontally or vertically, causing the image and game screen to take up the entire display.
However, there is a drawback to full-screen scaling, for example, the size of a game character can be stretched to make it look bloated and fat or the character can be too slim, which makes it look a bit strange.

Center
By applying GPU scaling at the center, we get a very appropriate and perfect image scale, where the characters appear normal in height and size, giving the player a very comfortable visual experience.
However, there is a phenomenon of center scaling, because after the scale is expanded to the right size, the vertical or horizontal direction of the display can not be fully filled, so there will be black bars around the top, bottom, left and right sides of the display.
Advantages and disadvantages of GPU scaling
Pros:
Improved image quality
GPU image scaling not only gives the image the right size, but also improves the quality of the image. Even if the resolution of the old image is low, the GPU scaling produces a clearer and sharper image quality, giving buyers a more realistic image.
Flexibility
GPU scaling can be used to change the size of the game scale at will using the graphics card processing, better control of the scaling aspect ratio, and enable gamers to choose a game screen scale that suits their needs, which can certainly label the GPU scaling function as flexible.
Enhanced Compatibility
GPU scaling is extremely compatible and supports modern displays to play older games. It enables old games to operate freely on newer displays as well, ensuring that the image is scaled without distortion or warping of the screen for a smooth, high-quality gaming experience.
Disadvantages:
Black bars appear
When image scaling cannot be done with full-screen expansion, black bars will appear around the image, which will greatly reduce the visibility of the horizontal or vertical viewing angle. Players need to be close to the center of the display to get a superior gaming experience.
Visual Effects Artifacts
After GPU scaling, even though you can play older and different scaled games smoothly, the whole screen will look extra strange, and the character image, game object image, and operation keys will be affected to some extent.
For example, the whole person looks fat, but it’s still pretty good for a shooting game because the bullseye gets bigger; and for vertically scaled image quality, sometimes it looks extra artifactual because no character’s true proportions will grow taller and thinner, or a gigantic, ancient tree will be pulled into a normal image, leaving the player without too much of a sense of shock in these image proportions.
Slight Input Latency
There is a delay in the operation of the display after the GPU has scaled the image quality. For example, using GPU scaling technology to expand the resolution of an older version of a game, the buttons of the game keys may or may not show a slight delay in operation, a phenomenon that creates a serious blow to some gamers who are in pursuit of the ultimate smoothness.
This can be avoided by purchasing a quality GPU processor at a higher cost.
How to turn GPU scaling on or off
On the NVIDIA GPU side
Step 1: It is to right-click on the desktop of the display and then select the NVIDIA control panel, if you can not see the NVIDIA option, we can click on the more display, if there is still no NVIDIA control panel, it means that you do not have NVIDIA installed on your monitor, then you need to download an NVIDIA.
Step 2: we enter the NVIDIA control panel, from the left side of the menu bar, find the “display” option, left-click into it, you will see a lot of options interface with the option to open or close, you want to turn off the GPU scaling can be directly clicked on the close option, you want to open the GPU scaling and look at the following.
Step 3: we find GPU scaling in the many display options, and then you can choose your favorite scaling mode to adjust the ratio size.
Step 4: Once you’ve adjusted the scaling, and you’re ready to use the selected scale, click on “Override scaling modes for game and program settings”. After that, you can see your chosen GPU scaling mode in the game interface.
For AMD GPUs
Step 1: It is to right click on the desktop of the display, find the AMD control panel in the menu bar and click on it, if you can’t see the AMD option, we can click on the Show More option, if it still doesn’t appear the AMD control panel, it means that your monitor doesn’t have AMD installed, you need to download an AMD.
Step 2: then we have entered the AMD control panel, we find the “Display” option from left to right, click on it to see the GPU scaling options, options corresponding to the choice of open or close. If you need to turn off GPU scaling, you can click off directly, if you need to turn it on, you need to watch the next step.
Step 3: we enable GPU scaling, in the next box we can see a downward pointing triangle button, click on it to see the three zoom modes that can be selected (Keep Aspect Ratio, Whole Panel, Centered)
Step 4: Click on the desired zoom mode, then exit the AMD Control Panel, open the game interface, and the display will be able to show the scale you have chosen.
Which situations require GPU scaling?
Older monitors: If you have an older or cheaper monitor, you can install an NVIDIA or AMD control panel for GPU scaling, which will allow you to get a better image quality and a more outstanding visual experience when using the display.
Need more control: GPU scaling is more flexible than display scaling because GPU scaling has more scaling modes. When the scaling effect of your display is not enough for you, you need GPU scaling to give you more extended mode options, so that you can choose the scaling mode that suits your needs to get a satisfactory image ratio.
Low resolution games: Using GPU scaling can expand the image ratio and improve the image quality for low resolution games. This is for some old gamers of old games, not only do they achieve an improvement in image quality and image ratio, but also stir up their past memories and so on.
How GPU scaling is good for gaming
GPU scaling is a technology that can adjust the display image rendering from new. It is a very beneficial technology for old games, from scaling up the game images to increasing the resolution and providing more vibrant colors, making old games look new and also bringing more old gamers back to the game.
Game studios have also been able to retain old players by implementing various game events or giving away game packs, while also attracting new players and gaining more support to keep the game going for longer.
However, for modern games, GPU scaling does not bring more benefits, because nowadays games are advancing with the progress of science and technology, and often can update the game quality to adapt to each new development of display technology; if you start the GPU scaling function in a new game, it will lead to lagging or delayed game images; So GPU scaling has more disadvantages than advantages for new games.
In short, in the gaming field, GPU scaling brings more benefits to old games than new ones.
Should we try GPU scaling?
The GPU scaling technology feature is not that new to most of the buyers nowadays, because modern new games are frequently updated with the advancement of technology, so if you are not loyal to the older games, then GPU scaling is not recommended to try.
However, there are times when you can turn on GPU scaling and it won’t have any effect on modern games, as the newer games nowadays are able to run at the standard size of the display, which is a benefit that allows us to play modern games as well as the older ones as we please.
