The history of LED displays: everything you need to know

The LED displays that we see everywhere around us didn’t come into being all at once; it took the hard work and research of the last generation to make them visible to us. For this reason, this post will take you through the history of LED displays.

The origin of LED displays

In 1907, the British scientist Henry Joseph Read discovered the phenomenon of electroluminescence while conducting experiments using silicon carbide. But this discovery was not concerned by anyone at that time, until the 1960s to attract the attention of the world.

In 1962, the most important key component for making LED displays, the light-emitting diode, was invented by Nick Holonyak. For this reason, Nick Holonyak is also honored as the “father of LED”.

The diode he invented could only display red color and was used in indicator lights, calculators and digital watches. Marked the beginning of the practical application of light-emitting diodes.

The development of LED display

  • 1968: The world’s first LED display was introduced. It was developed through numerous research and development efforts under the leadership of Howard C. Borden and Gerald P. Pighini of HP Associates and HP Labs.
  • 1969: Hewlett-Packard introduces the HP 5082-7000 Digital Indicator. This is the first LED display device using integrated LED circuit technology, which makes it a revolution in digital display technology, laying a solid foundation for the development of LED displays in the future.
  • 1970 to 1980: The development of LED technology has made great progress. During this period, new semiconductor materials were discovered, which could make LED light beads emit green or yellow light. The first digital LED displays were developed for use in clocks, calculators and early digital signage.
  • 1980 to 1990: Light-emitting diodes with blue light were developed, which could be combined with red and green diodes to achieve a three-color spectrum of light, making up for the lack of monochromatic lighting. This progress makes the LED display screen display becomes more colorful, officially opened the world of full-color LED display.
  • 1990 to 2000: this stage is the fastest period of development of the LED display industry, LED full-color display has begun to enter the right track, can be sold on the market, the production scale from the initial few enterprises gradually developed into dozens of enterprises. LED full-color display applications also by the original text display has been fully expanded, and gradually in the financial securities, sports, airports, railway stations, highway traffic sign, commercial advertising, post and telecommunications communications and other fields.
  • 2000 to 2020: LED display technology has been further improved. This period of LED display in order to be able to facilitate the transportation and installation, so that the entire LED display is divided into two parts: LED module and LED cabinet. This makes the LED display with modular nature, can be freely customized in various sizes and shapes to meet the needs of different customers. And this period of time between the display industry has good competition and cooperation, so that different types of LED display endless, JYLED is also in this stage of gradual development.

LED screen history of the evolution of packaging technology

Early

In the early days of LED display, LED display the most commonly used LED screen packaging technology is DIP package. DIP package technology is the abbreviation of double in-line package.

This stage of the use of DIP packaging LED display, is the production of workers one by one to the LED lamp beads directly inserted into the PCB panel.

This period of labor costs will be relatively low, coupled with no other encapsulation technology, so in nearly 5 years or so, DIP LED display has long dominated the market.

However, the disadvantages of this production method is also very obvious, it will be to a certain extent on the LED display inside the circuit board caused by the impact.

At the same time, this human production method can not ensure that the LED lamp beads remain at the same height, which will lead to uneven light emission of the LED display, and the filling of the glue, but also the use of artificial filling of the glue, so it is very easy to have problems.

Mid-term

In the mid-term, mechanized production gradually replaced manual production, LED display packaging technology has evolved from DIP packaging technology to SMD packaging technology, SMD technology(surface-mounted technology) is to rely on fully automated machinery to achieve.

Its advantage is that its LED beads can be evenly distributed, the consistency of the screen display will be better. Moreover, the pixel pitch can be arranged more densely, thus realizing a higher resolution than DIP LED displays.

The use of fully automated machinery for production can also effectively reduce the production process problems, greatly improving the efficiency of the work.

By the mid-term, in addition to the larger pitch DIP LED is retained, the smaller pitch DIP LED has been gradually replaced by SMD LED display.

Later period

This period of time has emerged a lot of new types of LED display, such as transparent LED display, small pitch LED display, flexible LED display and other new LED displays continue to emerge.

And in order to meet the needs of people indoors to see a clearer image, but also created a new packaging technology – COB.

It can bring a smaller pixel pitch for the LED display, specifically, COB packaging technology can make the LED display pixel center distance is less than 1mm, so as to give the audience a higher definition of the display screen.

However, because this is an innovative display technology, its process is not very mature, the production cost is higher, resulting in the overall price of COB LED display is more expensive.

Conclusion

Through the content of this article, I believe you can learn about the historical development process of LED display. In the future, LED display technology will continue to innovate and develop, bringing different viewing experiences to the audience.
