What is V-SYNC?

V-SYNC is an acronym for Vertical Synchronization, which appears mainly in computer settings. It synchronizes the refresh rate of the monitor with the computer’s frame rate (FPS), effectively eliminating visual artifacts and screen tearing during rendering. Maybe you don’t know about it yet, it doesn’t matter, you can follow this article to learn more about it.

How does V-SYNC work?

After starting the computer V-SYNC, V-SYNC will adjust the refresh rate of the next frame directly after the monitor completes a round of refresh, making the frame rate of V-SYNC consistent with the refresh rate on the monitor, to make the displayed picture more complete and effectively improve the visual experience of the viewer.

What are the benefits of enabling V-SYNC?

V-SYNC can limit the frame rate of the computer, effectively reducing the stress on the computer’s GPU and reducing the heat generated by the GPU.

At the same time, V-SYNC can be synchronized with the refresh rate on the display, which can improve the frame rate of the display screen, so that the screen on the monitor no longer appears to be torn, and provide the operator with a smoother and more dynamic picture.

Similarities and differences between V-SYNC, G-Sync (Nvidia) and FreeSync (AMD)

V-SYNC, G-Sync and FreeSync are all capable of adjusting the refresh rate of the monitor to eliminate display images with tearing. However, their specific working principles and the devices they are applied to are very different.

V-SYNC will be through a specific program to calculate and adjust the frame rate and refresh rate, so that they remain at the same level, to further reduce the occurrence of screen tearing phenomenon, and, V-SYNC can be well adapted to all computers.

G-Sync is only available in G-Sync compatible monitors and TVs or computers with Nvidia GPUs. At the same time, it mainly analyzes and calculates the data of the minimum and maximum refresh rates of the monitor and the computer to find the value of the refresh rate that balances between the monitor and the computer, which can make the refresh rate of the monitor and the computer to keep the synchronized state.

FreeSync can dynamically adjust the refresh rate of the monitor to keep in line with the frame rate of the computer, effectively reducing the latency of the input and eliminating the lag phenomenon of the display. However, FreeSync is only available on FreeSync-capable monitors and computers with AMD GPUs, and cannot be applied to all PCs and monitors.

What is the difference between V-SYNC and frame rate limiting?

There is a big difference between V-SYNC and frame rate limiting. Frame rate limiting limits the maximum number of frames per second that can be rendered on a graphics card, which can cause a lot of stuttering and tearing in the display, which affects the viewing experience.

V-SYNC, on the other hand, maintains the refresh rate of the display and the computer at the same value at the maximum ratio, preventing the screen from tearing and lagging.

V-SYNC with different drivers: Startup process

Through the above introduction, we have a very deep understanding of V-SYNC, the next step is to understand how to start V-SYNC for different driver devices, the following are the three most commonly used driver devices in life:

NVIDIA

First, we have to start the NVIDIA, then right-click on the display desktop, a tab will appear, click on the “Properties”, and then click on “Settings”, then click on the “Advanced” option.

In the “Advanced” tab, we want to select the option that contains the graphics card name and the NVIDIA logo.

Once this is done, click on the “Performance and Quality Settings” option on the right and look for the “Vertical Synchronization” option called “Vertical Synchronization”.

Then look for the Global Driver Settings called “Vertical Synchronization” and make sure that Vertical Synchronization is either “On” or “Application Controlled”.

Finally, click Apply and reboot Scratch LIVE and Video-SL.

ATI

First, right-click on ATI’s desktop, select “Properties”, then “Settings”, then “Advanced”, then “3D”. At this point it will show two entries, Direct X and OpenGL.

We’re going to click on “OpenGL”, then look for the “Wait for Vertical Synchronization” option and check that it’s in one of the following states: Default On, Always On, and Default Off.

If it’s on, then you’re done with this trip. If it is off, then click on “Customize” and set it to either “Default On” or “Always On”.

Finally, after selecting the “Apply” option, reboot Scratch LIVE and Video-SL.

Intel

Although most Intel does not support V-SYNC, it is possible to turn off “Asynchronous Flip” to minimize display tearing.

First, right-click on the Intel desktop, click on “Properties”, then “Settings”, then “Advanced”, and select the option that contains the graphics card’s name and Intel logo. Select the tab that contains the graphics card name and Intel logo.

When this is done, click on the “3D” option, a tab will pop up, find the “Asynchronous Flip” option and change it to “Off”.

Finally, click on “Apply” and restart Video-SL and Scratch LIVE.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a special monitor or graphics card to use G-Sync or FreeSync?

Yes, you do. When you want to use FreeSync, you need to choose a FreeSync-compatible monitor and computer. When you want to use G-Sync, you need a G-Sync compatible monitor and computer.

How do I know if my monitor supports V-Sync technology?

You can check your monitor’s specifications to determine if your monitor supports V-Sync technology. You can also visit the manufacturer’s official website to learn more about the supported features.

Is V-Sync available for all types of games?

Not necessarily. For some older games, they may not be compatible with V-Sync technology. However, for fast-paced games that require a lot of rendering, V-Sync technology is compatible and can improve the quality of the game’s graphics to enhance the gamer’s viewing experience.

Does V-Sync drain the battery life of a laptop?

In general, V-Sync does not affect the battery of a laptop. However, when V-Sync is too high, causing the laptop’s GPU to maintain a high frame rate all the time, it can indirectly lead to an increase in the laptop’s power consumption, which can further shorten the laptop’s battery life.

Will V-Sync cause lagging or screen flickering?

Yes, it can. Although not very common, V-Sync can cause the monitor to lag or the screen flickering. When the refresh rate of the monitor is higher than the frame rate of V-Sync, it makes the monitor lag. When V-Sync’s frame rate is faulty or the system has trouble maintaining a consistent refresh rate, it makes the monitor flicker.

Should I use V-Sync with a high refresh rate monitor?

You can use it according to your needs. For high refresh rate monitors, screen tearing is generally less noticeable, so in this case, V-Sync can be left out, but when screen tearing is still noticeable, V-Sync can be used.

Can V-Sync improve the gaming experience?

Yes, V-Sync eliminates screen tearing for the display, providing a smoother visual experience for gamers. In some cases, it can limit the frame rate, reducing the heat and stress on the display’s GPU.

Is it better to use V-Sync or manually limit FPS?

Depending on your preference and specific settings, V-Sync can provide you with a smoother frame rate, but may cause input lag. Manually limiting the FPS gives you better control, but does not eliminate frame tearing.
