In the last issue, we have introduced the “Top 10 China chip manufacturers (including Taiwan chip manufacturers)“, and then let’s talk about what LED chip manufacturers are abroad.
LED chip market environment is saturated
The LED Research Institute (GGII) of the High-tech Industrial Research Institute (GGII) compiled the “2016 China LED Chip Industry Research Report (Seventh Edition)” based on the actual investigation of upstream epitaxial chip companies across the country. Industry development characteristics and market analysis of the top ten LED chip manufacturers in mainland China.
In 2015, the output value of China’s LED chip industry reached 13 billion yuan, an increase of 8.3% compared with 2014, and the growth rate slowed down significantly compared with 2014. In 2015, major chip manufacturers such as Sanan and Huacan continued to expand production. In addition, downstream demand slowed down significantly, industry competition intensified, and chip prices fell sharply. The annual LED chip output increased by 60%, but the output value only increased by 8.3%.
From the data point of view, the foreign chip form is not much different, let’s take a look.
Foreign LED chip manufacturers and LED chip suppliers
CREE, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Nichia, Toyoda Gosei, Dayang Nichia, Toshiba, Showa Denko (SDK), Lumileds, Smileds, Genelite, Osram, GeLcore, Seoul Semiconductor, etc., Purui, South Korea An Ying (Epivalley) and so on.
Top 10 foreign LED chip manufacturers
1. CREE
Well-known LED chip manufacturer, CREE Corporation of the United States, its products are based on silicon carbide (SiC), gallium nitride (GaN), silicon (Si) and related compounds, including blue, green, ultraviolet light emitting diodes (LED), near ultraviolet Laser, radio frequency (RF) and microwave devices, power switching devices and silicon carbide (SiC) epitaxial wafers for production and scientific research.
2. OSRAM
It is the world’s second-largest manufacturer of optoelectronic semiconductors, products include lighting, sensors, and image processors. Headquartered in Germany, with R&D and manufacturing bases in Malaysia, the company employs approximately 3,400 people and generated sales of EUR 4.59 billion in 2004. OSRAM’s best-known products are LEDs, which are only a few millimeters long, come in a variety of colors, have low power consumption, and have a long lifespan.
3. NICHIA
Nichia, a famous LED chip manufacturer, a Japanese company, was established in 1956, developed the world’s first blue LED (1993), the world’s first pure green LED (1995), built around the world subsidiary.
4. Toyoda Gosei
Toyoda Gosei, headquartered in Aichi, Japan, produces auto parts and LEDs. LEDs account for about 10% of revenue. The white light LED jointly developed by Toyoda Gosei and Toshiba is a combination of ultraviolet LEDs and phosphors. Blue LEDs are combined with phosphors differently.
5. Agilent
As the world’s leading supplier of LEDs, its products provide efficient and reliable light sources for a wide variety of products including automobiles, electronic information boards and traffic lights, industrial equipment, cellular phones and consumer products.
The high reliability of these components usually ensures that the light source does not need to be replaced over the life of the device. Agilent’s low-cost dot-matrix LED displays, a wide variety of seven-segment displays, and Agilent’s LED light bar series are available in a variety of packages and colors.
6. TOSHIBA
Toshiba Semiconductor is a major supplier of LEDs for automobiles, especially for instrument panel backlights, car radios, navigation systems, climate control and other units. The technology used is InGaAlP with wavelengths from 560nm (puregreen) to 630nm (red). Recently, Toshiba has developed a new technology UV+phosphor (ultraviolet + fluorescence), the LED chip can emit ultraviolet light, and after exciting the phosphor powder, it will emit various lights, such as white light, pink, cyan and other lights.
7. LUMILEDS
Lumileds Lighting is the world’s leading manufacturer of high-power LED and solid-state lighting. Its products are widely used in lighting, TV, traffic signals and general lighting. Luxeon Power Light Sources is its patented product that combines the small size and long life characteristics of traditional lamps and LEDs.
It also provides a variety of LED chips and LED packages, such as red, green, blue, amber, white, etc. LED Lumileds Lighting is headquartered in the United States, and its factories are located in the Netherlands, Japan, and Malaysia. It was established in 1999 by a joint venture between Agilent and Philips. Acquired the company.
8. SSC
Seoul Semiconductor is the largest manufacturer of LED green lighting technology in Korea, and one of the eight largest in the world (Source: StrategiesUnlimited–LED Market Research). Seoul Semiconductor’s main business is the production of a full line of LED assembly and custom module products, including AC-driven semiconductor light source products such as: Acriche, Edge Lighting LED, Top Lighting LED, Slice LED, Plug-in LED and Piranha (Super Light) LED Wait. Products have been widely used in general lighting, display lighting, mobile phone backlights, TVs, laptop computers, automotive lighting, household items and traffic signals.
9. SemiLEDs Xu Ming
It is the world’s leading high performance light emitting diode (HPLED) for general lighting applications. SemiLEDs’ LED chips are the smartest and most efficient on the market today. Using copper alloy substrates, SemiLEDs have successfully developed and commercialized MvPLED technology (Metal Vertical Photonic Light Emitting Diode).
With a metal substrate and unique device structure, SemiLEDs’ HPLEDs have better electrical and thermal conductivity resulting in higher brightness, efficiency and better heat transfer, suitable for lighting applications including displays, signage, communications, automotive and General lighting.
